Memorial Day weekend tends to kick off camping season here in Washington, and we’re ready for another amazing year of sleeping under the stars. But instead of heading back to your go-to campsite, try setting up camp somewhere new. These seven campgrounds are somewhat off the grid and always beautiful.
- White River Campground, Mt. Rainier National Park
everwindingroad / TripAdvisor This quiet campground is one of three drive-in campgrounds within Mount Rainier National Park, and it definitely boasts the best views. There are 112 sites here, but they’re all first-come, first-served.
- Hoh Campground, Olympic National Park
Virginia J. / TripAdvisor Most people who camp at Olympic National Park choose to sleep near the beach, which is completely understandable. However, if more campers knew they could stay ear the entrance to the Hoh Rain Forest (and sometimes sleep next to elk), they probably would.
- Heart O’ The Hills Campground, Olympic National Park
Lisa M / TripAdvisor Located near Hurricane Ridge, Heart O’ The Hills is a great place to spend a night after enjoying a long day of hiking. Sites here are large and well distributed, so you can enjoy your privacy. Address: 2823 South Oak Street, Port Angeles, WA, 98362
- Silver Fir Campground, Glacier
kirkyo / TripAdvisor This campground is situated in the forest along the North Fork Nooksack River, and it’s completely relaxing. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring, and even if you’re not typically a fan of camping, this place might win you over. Address: Mount Baker Highway, Deming, WA, 98244
- Willaby Campground, Quinault
half-Brit / TripAdvisor Located on the south shore of Lake Quinault, Willaby Campground is surrounded by dense forest. There are 19 campsites including 2 walk-in tent sites for backpackers. Address: South Shore Road, Quinault, WA, 98575
- Marcus Island Campground, Evans
Google Marcus Island Campground is hidden in the trees in the heart of the Lake Roosevelt Recreation Area. The campground is heavily shaded, so it makes a perfect summer escape. The main access road is single lane and winding, but it’s worth it.
- Wildhorse Campground, Quincy
MtBeckyB / TripAdvisor
The Gorge Amphitheater is an amazing place to see a show, but the onsite campground can get crowded quickly. But this tranquil oasis is just two miles down the road, and it’s fantastic. The campground has free hot showers, an onsite chef, and free shuttle service to and from the Gorge.
Address: 22456 West Baseline Road, Quincy, WA, 98848
It’s hard not to love camping when you live in Washington. But if you have yet to embrace the fun of sleeping surrounded by nature, these campgrounds are for you.
