Memorial Day weekend tends to kick off camping season in Montana, and we couldn’t be happier. If you’re ready to hang out around the campfire and sleep under the stars (or in an RV if that’s your style), you could head to one of the Treasure State’s most popular campgrounds… or you could go a little off the beaten path. Here are a few many Montanans have never heard of.
- Fish Creek Campground, Glacier National Park
Bayou456 / TripAdvisor Fish Creek Campground may be the second largest campground at Glacier National Park, but it’s just off the beaten path enough that many Montanans don’t know it exists. You’ll find it near West Glacier, about four miles northwest of the west park entrance. Address: Fish Creek Campground Road, West Glacier, MT, 59936
- Kintla Lake Campground, Glacier National Park
Chad Roberts / alltrails.com This quiet and secluded campground sits just 40 miles from the Canadian border. It’s not easy to reach, meaning it’s rarely crowded, and the lake views are amazing.
- Goose Bay Marina & Campground, Townsend
Goose Bay Marina & Campground Facebook Situated along the eastern shore of the Canyon Ferry Reservoir near Townsend, this campground offers picnic sites with amazing views as well as full hook-ups and an onsite convenience store. The marina makes it a convenient camping spot for boaters. Address: 300 Goose Bay Lane, Townsend, MT, 59644
- Cabinet Gorge RV Park & Campground, Noxon
Brother M / Flickr After a day of kayaking or canoeing on the Clark Fork River, set up camp at Cabinet Gorge. With plenty of RV hookups, tent sites, hiking trails, and a boat launch, it has everything you need for an off-the-grid getaway. Address: 33 Blue Jay Drive, Noxon, MT, 59853
- Tally Lake Campground, near Whitefish
Maria H / TripAdvisor Tally Lake is the second deepest lake in Montana, and it’s also extremely beautiful. The campground sits right on the shore, about 17 miles northwest of Whitefish. You’ll have your choice of 40 sites, plus a quiet beach, fire rings, and picnic tables. And you’ll definitely want to bring your kayak or canoe. Address: Tally Lake Road, Whitefish, MT, 59937
- Tuchuck Campground, Flathead National Forest
Google Located about 50 miles north of Columbia Falls, this remote campground requires quite a drive to reach. There are only seven designated campsites here, so it’s safe to say you won’t see a crowd.
- Red Cliff Campground, Big Sky
Google The Gallatin National Forest is incredibly scenic (and enormous). This campground has 63 sites and plenty of perfect picnic areas, but it’s spacious enough that you’ll feel like you’re alone. Address: 41120 US-191, Gallatin Gateway, MT, 59730
Living in Montana means loving the great outdoors. If camping isn’t your favorite way to experience nature, these weekend getaways will be more appealing.
