Being from New Hampshire means a lot of things. It means being surrounded by constant beauty for one thing. It also means harsh winters, lots of layers and some funny looks from those you meet in other states. “You’re from where? Is that near Canada?” Indeed, there are some things about being from New Hampshire that seem to follow us around. Included on that list are some very distinct habits. You all probably do some of these things, but don’t worry – no one expects you to unlearn them!
- Forever mocking Massachusetts.
keithallison / Flickr Their drivers make things more difficult and some people think their accents are ours, but in the end…we still root for their sports teams.
- Pronouncing “drawer” differently than other people.
jambox998 / Flickr Here in New Hampshire, this cat is sitting in “draw,” not a “drawer.” We might not always admit it, but we do say a few things…interestingly.
- Avoiding sales tax.
nickerwin / Flickr We don’t have it, we don’t like it, we don’t get it. No matter where we live, the idea of sales tax will always be weird.
- Agreeing with our friends in a way that others don’t understand.
jcbwalsh / Flickr In most states, if you tell a friend that you don’t like the bad weather and they agree, they might say “I agree.” Here in New Hampshire you’re more likely to hear someone say “so don’t I!” It might be complicated to decipher, but it means you’ve got a kindred spirit. And, don’t expect that to change any time soon.
- Speaking of snow, when we wake up to it we somehow just know that we need to wake up early.
treetopmom / Flickr Is it something in our bones that tells us that we’ll need the extra time to clear off our car?
- Buying our liquor at the side of the road.
lunacow / Flickr In New Hampshire we buy liquor at rest stops and beer at gas stations. It won’t ever stop being weird when we’re visiting friends in other state and they go to (gasp!) liquor store!
- Being fastidious about the way we spell.
boston_public_library / Flickr We had to grow up knowing how to spell things like “Winnipesaukee” and “Kancamagus.” We’re pretty particular now.
- Putting Maple syrup on anything and everything.
seacoasteatlocal / Flickr There’s nothing better than the sweetness of pure, local Maple syrup. So, why not put it on everything? We’ve been known to put it on pancakes, which isn’t strange at all. But, if we’re being honest, sometimes we’ll put it on toast when we’re in a hurry.
- Loving our state motto.
formulanone / Flickr You might have friends from other states who have no idea what their state motto is. Some might not even know that a state motto is a thing. But here in New Hampshire? We live free or die!
- Never expecting a snow day. Ever.
mtwashington / Flickr Snow is so common here that anything less than a few inches doesn’t even get talked about. So, we never expect a good snow day. But when we get it - it’s a celebration!
- Choosing plaid over other things.
brandoncwarren / Flickr Sure, we like to dress up when we need to. But, there’s just something comforting about the ol’ standby plaid flannel!
While we’re thinking about state pride, check out these 8 things that make New Hampshirites cringe. And, if you’re not from here, try avoid doing them!
