Tours aren’t just for schoolchildren or tourists visiting another state. There are plenty right here in our home that are worth experiencing. They showcase the beauty and diversity of Texas from caves to vineyards to ranches and even museums. There are far too many to even attempt listing them all, but we think these 10 are especially worth mentioning.
- Texas Wine Tours (Fredericksburg)
Alex Ranaldi/Flickr They don’t call it “wine country” for nothing. Central Texas is full of vineyards that produce some of the best wine around. The tours include leisurely, romantic walks through the fields, wine tasting, and even dinner at a rustic restaurant overlooking the scene as the sun sets.
- Natural Bridge Caverns Adventure Tour (New Braunfels)
naturalbridgecaverns.com Although this tour is only for the extremely physically able, it’s definitely worth getting in shape for. You get to act like a real cave explorer and crawl through narrow hidden passages, repel down cave walls, and access exclusive rooms in the caverns that the normal tours don’t include.
- River Walk Boat Tours (San Antonio)
Flickr/mwhaling This is actually two tours in one: a relaxing boat cruise on the river and then a fun, hop-on-hop-off, double-decker bus tour of popular tourist attractions in the city like the Alamo. At only about $30 a person, it’s a relatively cheap way to explore the city and have a blast!
- Space Center Houston (Houston)
Flickr/heatheronhertravels It’s a surreal moment to walk through the building that the first words spoken on the moon were directed to. You can tour the entire facility and admire the highly technical space equipment that has been gathering information about the great unknown world that is outer space for decades.
- City Segway Tour (Austin)
Flickr/coreyp I don’t know about you, but I never get to see all the sights I want when I take a trip to a city because walking around just takes too long. Luckily, Austin has come up with an awesome solution to that problem - segways! For less than $70, you can cruise the city in style (joking) for hours and see everything your heart desires.
- Candlelight Tour of Homes (Fredericksburg)
hffi.org You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into an old Dickens tale when you take this tour of Fredericksburg’s oldest homes at Christmastime. You’ll hear stories about the town’s history and see how residents of Fredericksburg past decorated their homes during the holidays.
- Caverns of Sonora (Sonora)
Flickr/lalalaleeuh These caverns have been voted one of the most beautiful places in the entire WORLD, and they’re right here in Texas for our enjoyment. The tour walks you through breathtaking rock formations and stalactites and stalagmites lined with shiny minerals. There really is nothing like it.
- LBJ Ranch (Johnson City)
Flick/dlanger Not only is the ranch beautiful, boasting wildflowers as far as the eye can see and an impressive herd of longhorn; it’s also a history lesson because former President Johnson was born, raised, died, and was buried on its grounds. You’ll learn about the life of one of our most influential presidents and find some peace and quiet in nature at the same time.
- Museum of Natural Science (Houston)
Flickr/mkhatri1 You might think museums are just for school field trips, but they can actually be incredibly interesting. In this museum, you’ll see dinosaurs, butterflies, artifacts from ancient Egypt, and so many more educational yet fun and exciting exhibits.
- The Alamo (San Antonio)
Flickr/nanpalmero And we round out the list with the most famous mission in Texas war history. You can almost see the soldiers fighting to the death for our freedom all around you. It’s a truly humbling experience that makes my heart swell with pride for Texas.
Have you done any of these tours? What are some other interesting tours in Texas that you think everyone should experience at least once?
